I met the twins many years ago during a weekend of gambling with a
bunch of my fraternity brothers in Tahoe. We were in a large
elevator,
on our way down to the casino, when the doors opened and we saw
them. They entered, looked us over and said in unison "Would you
like to do
some gambling with us?" Then one of them said "Hi, I'm Dorothy
and this
is Debra but please just call us Dotty and Debby." I spoke up and
said
"I apologize, but you've caught us a bit off guard, I'm Mumbles and I'm
sure my fraternity brothers and I would love to spend time with
you." "If you're fraternity brothers then I say we should go back
to our
suite", said Debby. "What kind of devilish games do you girls
have in
mind?" Lurch jokingly asked. Within seconds we were on our way to
the
twin's suite. Debby started off saying, "We have got a hunch that
you'd
love to see some magic first." Then Dotty continued the pitch
with,
"Yes, and then we'll play a word game that involves our telepathic
powers and some generous wagering by you guys."
Once we got to their suite half of our group went into an adjoining
room with Debby and half stayed with Dotty. For the next hour or
so we
watched the twins perform some magic; mostly card tricks. Then we
found
out about the word game. We would be allowed to provide a word to the
one of the twins. They would in turn provide the matching word
that was
supposed to be the first word that came into their head. The same
initial word would be provided to the other twin and the bet was that
this twin would provide same matching word. We could choose any
word we
wanted as long as it wasn't a swear word and as long as they understood
the word. The minimum bet would be $20 per word and if they provided a
different matching word we would get $60.
Someone called out the word "Science" and Dotty promptly told to use
the small pads of paper to write our names and a single word and pass
it to her with a twenty dollar bill. Dotty looked at each paper,
quickly wrote her matching word and then returned it to whoever had
made the bet. Debby did the same in the adjoining room. After the
twins
had finished writing their matching words and the papers had been
returned, the group from the adjoining room came over to our side.
Two chairs were set up for the twins so that they were separated by a
good 20 feet but facing each other. The rest of us sat on couches
that
were on either side of the path between the twins. One of the
twins
would then call us in turn to call out our words. The twins sat
absolutely still and within seconds the twin, who had not seen that
word before, said the exact same matching word that her sister had
previously written down. This pattern repeated itself multiple
times
and only one word was missed. The twins had been physically
separated,
we watched their every move and at no time were they away from our
complete view.
For many years I simply believed that the twins had indeed some sort of
telepathic powers until I discovered something while solving another
geocache puzzle. I can't be the only one with this insight and as
such
others should have no problem extracting coordinates from the following
word pair list.
deadline + mortician
comedian + academy
abalone + custodian
mosquito + stampede
infectious + frivolity
maverick + consensus
pugnacious + league
obvious + average
